Help for Under-represented Authors

Free places available for the 90-Minute Undiscovered Voices Masterclasses and scholarship SCBWI memberships for writers under-represented in children’s books

For the first time, SCBWI British Isles /EU regions will offer scholarship SCBWI memberships in conjunction with Undiscovered Voices. Only SCBWI members can submit work for consideration for Undiscovered Voices, which can be a challenging financial hurdle for some writers. SCBWI British Isles /EU regions will award a limited number of scholarship memberships to writers in time to submit to Undiscovered Voices.

Important: Please note that the deadline for scholarships has now passed.

Here’s how it works

Writers living in the UK or EU who identify as being from a background currently under-represented in publishing* or who are unable to afford an SCBWI membership may request a free place at the Undiscovered Voices Masterclass Series, taking place on 8, 15 & 22 May 2021 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. on Zoom. Details on the series are available here.

After the final masterclass, any UK- or EU-based writer awarded a free place for this masterclass series will be asked to submit the title, a 75-word synopsis and the first 500 words of their completed novel. A limited number of scholarship SCBWI memberships will be awarded to writers who show promise. Successful applicants will be notified in early June 2021 – in time to submit to the Undiscovered Voices competition.

Eligibility for Free Places – Terms & Conditions

To apply for one of the free places for the Undiscovered Voices masterclasses, you do not have to be a member of SCBWI, but you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You should identify as being from a background currently under-represented in publishing* or without the free place you would not be able to attend.
  2. You should be able to demonstrate a serious commitment to writing for children (i.e. have taken part in critique groups or have taken advantage of free courses and resources that are available).
How to apply

To apply for a free place, please email uv AT britishscbwi.org with Free Places in the subject header. In no more than a few sentences, please explain how you identify as being under-represented and tell us something about your commitment to writing for children. If you are applying for the free places due to financial hardship, you do not need to explain your situation. We will trust that anyone who applies has a legitimate need. The free places will then be allocated to all eligible applicants.

The deadline for submitting applications for free places for the 90-Minute Undiscovered Voices Masterclasses was midnight on Friday 23rd April.

As the deadline has passed, we’re no longer accepting applications for help.
