UV 2014 – Video: Illustration Judges on using the story starters

Please note: this video relates to the 2014 Undiscovered Voices judging panel.

In this clip from the Undiscovered Voices competition launch event on April 18th, our illustration judging panel answer some key questions. First, we asked them for their tips for working from the story starters and how to use a piece of text to inspire an illustration. Nghiem Ta suggests making time to experiment and to explore different styles (while still meeting the deadline!). Martin Salisbury suggests going with what grabs your attention and use your sketchbook to find your way into the character and subject before working on the final piece. Frances McKay reveals what the most important skill in creating black and white illustration – ability to draw is vital! Helen Graham-Cameron mentions using tone as well as line in black and white illustrations.

You may need to turn your volume up to hear some of the judges.
